to the character of Robinson Crusoe in the novel by Daniel Defoe. Survival Stories The first survivor to be examined is one that Defoe supposedly based his story
on. Alexander Selkirk was sent to be a castaway and "He took with him a little clothing, bedding, a musket and power, some tools, a Bible and tobacco" (BBC, 2006).
He then spent his time simply reading his Bible and waited for rescue but that did not come and when he thought it had come it turned out they were
Spaniards and he ran, hid, and escaped, living on the island for 4 years and when he was found he was envisioned as a wildman because of his ragged clothing
and beard (BBC, 2006). However, he "seemed stable when he was found" (BBC, 2006). Clearly this is very similar to the character of Crusoe for Crusoe relied on his Bible
and essentially lived far longer on his island, unchanged in any detrimental way his adventures. This image also brings to mind a film titled "Cast Away" starring Tom Hanks.
This man, stranded on an island, also living there for 4 years, like Selkirk, and also managing to survive on what he could find and do: "mending his dental health,
catching fish with a spear, predicting the weather with a selfmade calendar" (Reischl et al., 2006). While fictional, he is an individual who does demonstrate some trouble returning to the
