fantastic. The following paper examines some of the characteristics of surrealism in literature and examines where such characteristics are in Benders short story. Surrealism in "The Rememberer"
In many respects surrealism is something that is often associated with paintings and artwork, and it is in the definition of surrealism in artwork
that literature seemed to take its cue. This seems evident when we look at the following statement concerning surrealism in art: "The profound influence that this world of fantasy and
dream had on art and culture continues through today, particularly its exploration of the irrational as a creative source" (Traditional Fine Arts Organization).
In most cases surrealism in literature today is often referred to as magical realism. When we look at surrealism, however we note that "Surrealism is a style in which
fantastical visual imagery from the subconscious mind is used with no intention of making the work logically comprehensible" (Art Cyclopedia). This refers to paintings or artwork but clearly can be
applied to literature in terms of presenting visual imagery in words that does not need to make sense and involves the subconscious mind. This is very evident in Benders story
for the entire story involves the reverse evolution process her lover is going through as he moves from a human down the ladder of evolution to the point where he
