A 5 page paper that argues the following: over the years, individual rights have been denied by the Supreme Court. In the criminal justice system, this has lead to the relaxing of laws to the extent that our Fifth and Sixth Amendment rights have been seriously infringed upon. All rights to personal freedoms in the workplace have been taken away by the Supreme Court, and women's rights to abortion have been substantially reduced. The remaining issue for many of us is the Supreme Court's decision on First Amendment rights in regards to imposed decency on the Internet. This decision is expected within the next month. We can only hope it is not their desire to usurp further rights from United States citizenry. The affect on global Internet business is inestimable. Bibliography lists 4 sources. usurping the power of individuals to act on their freedoms according to the Bill of Rights. The Bill of Rights, originally the Magna Carta, were incorporated as the first
Ten Amendments to the Constitution for the purpose of protecting citizens from the government. The first Amendment protects freedom of speech, freedom of the press, and freedom of religion.
The second allows possession of firearms by citizens. The fourth guarantees the right against illegal search and seizure of property. The fifth through eighth Amendments protect a
person going to trial, most particularly; they protect a person from testifying against him or herself, and against cruel and unusual punishment. It is the job of the Supreme
Court to make decisions regarding individual rights when laws passed by Congress conflict with the Bill of Rights. However, the Supreme Court has passed rulings that violate many of
these rights. First Amendment Case. The current case under consideration by the Supreme Court is internet decency. Although the Supreme Court
generally supports freedom of speech, the current conservative move is to protect children from pornography and foul language on the internet and the results of their decision remain to be
seen. (Newsbytes 1997) Fifth and Sixth Amendment Cases. In order to use some information received during arrests before Miranda rights have
been read, the Supreme Court has allowed testimony on various forms of self-incriminating statements which are responded to questions "reasonably related to police record keeping concerns" (Kohlman 62)
