Supreme Court, William H. Rehnquist, is thought of as a long-time defender of the states unique role in the American system of government, a no-nonsense and business-like justice who is
always determined to move proceedings swiftly along, and a conservative man with an intellectual self confidence that has to be related to, in great measure, to the fact that he
has served in the nations highest court since he was appointed thirty years ago. Rehnquist is also thoroughly convinced that any move to weaken the doctrine of judicial independence only
results in damaging the overall efficacy of the federal courts system. Rehnquist points out that without this doctrine, the federal judiciary would not be able to function in either a
proper or meaningful fashion. That attitude then influences his opinions regarding judicial activism. According to Jaffa (1995) Chief Justice Rehnquist has identified himself "with a jurisprudence of original
intent" and adds that he shares the same opinion with Rehnquist that "only such jurisprudence can counteract the liberal judicial activism that like a cancer is eating away the substance
of our Constitution" (pp. 30). In general, fears of judicial activism are based on fears that the ideological beliefs of a judge as an individual citizen all too often interfere
