the appellate process. He had once been an object of liberal scorn, viewed by many as a relic who was cut out of the Barry Goldwater mold of conservatism.
But Rehnquist has refused to compromise his views, and as a result, he has, in a sense rewritten history for his opinions have often run contrary to established legal
and judicial precedents. Rehnquists appearance is nondescript, resembling that of a banker or college professor. But make no mistake about it his tenure on the U.S. Supreme Court
has registered an impact worthy of consideration. Although justices such as Antonin Scalia or Clarence Thomas generate more media attention, it is Rehnquist and Rehnquist alone who sets "the
courts conservative tone" and continues to define "its direction" (Marquand, 1997, p. 1). Born in 1924, William Rehnquists life had been relatively unremarkable prior to his entry into World War
II. After being discharged, the son of working-class parents graduated from Stanford University with a degree in political science, and received his Masters from Harvard in 1950 (Barrett, 1995).
Returning to Stanford for his law degree, Rehnquist graduated first in his class in 1952 (Barrett, 1995). After completing a clerkship under U.S. Supreme Court Justice Robert Jackson,
Rehnquist relocated to Phoenix, Arizona where he spent the next sixteen years enjoying a highly successful private law practice (Barrett, 1995). This may well have shaped Rehnquists legal interpretation
