John Marshall was the oldest child of 15, and was born in Virginia in a log cabin 1. He was greatly influenced by his father,
who became quite active and prominent in local and state politics 2. Interestingly, his mother was related to Thomas Jefferson, who would later become his nemesis 3. Marshall
was an officer in the Revolutionary War, and then briefly attended the College of William and Mary for law, but this didnt last for very long 4. In 1780,
he was admitted to the bar and was able to practice law in the west. By the 1780s, Marshall was a renowned Virginia lawyer who was forming the roots
of later political thought 5. In 1782, Marshall was elected to be a delegate to the Virginia assembly 6. He was married and lived with his wife in
Richmond, Virginia, where he would live until his death 7. Marshall became best known for his ability to concentrate the authority of the Supreme Court, and yet he was
also very supportive of business and the emerging American market economy 8. Marshall was outspoken against those who believed in states rights constitutional theory, and this struggle was evidenced
