A hard-working and sensible family has been derailed by circumstances beyond their control. After illness, loss of health care benefits and exhausting all savings, they face the danger of
homelessness despite their best efforts. Family Income and Expenses The husband is unable to work for an unknown length of time, and the
job the wife has begun will pay minimum wage for the first six months. Federal minimum wage is $5.15; they do not live in a state that requires a
minimum wage higher than federal minimum. Recent tax cuts reduce federal withholding to 10 percent; social security takes another 7.5 percent from paychecks. Based on an average work
week of 37.5 hours, the wife can expect a weekly take-home pay of $159.33. At 4.33 weeks in each month, monthly income will average $689.90.
Using the most frugal measures possible, the family will have a shortfall of no less than $485 each month. Child care expenses include care only for
the infant; adding the cost of appropriate care for the other two children will add at least another $300 a month, in the least expensive of all day care centers.
If the husband is bedridden, ideally both of the older children should be in daycare (the oldest in after school care), but there is little option of whether to
place the baby in day care. Minimal expenses are shown in the following table: Income Monthly take-home 37.5 hrs/wk 690 Expenses Rent 300
