of this debate examines this factor and the rationale behind this stance. Thirty-eight states currently utilize some form of execution in order to carry our a death penalty verdict
(Capital Punishment). Methods employed include "lethal injection, gas chamber, electrocution, hanging and firing squad," with lethal injection being the most common method (Capital Punishment). Over 900 executions have been conducted
since 1976, with the State of Texas leading the country in this regard (Capital Punishment). Defenders of capital punishment have been known to argue that the death penalty acts
to deter crime (Capital Punishment). However, when crime statistics on the incidence of homicide are compared between states where the death penalty is in place and states that do not
have the death penalty, empirically conducted research studies consistently show that the institution of the death penalty has no deterring effect on the murder rate (Goertzel). Comprehensive investigation into this
topic has led noted criminologists to conclude that "...executions have no discernible effect on homicide rates" (Goertzel). Therefore, for the purposes of this examination, this justification for the death penalty
will not be considered. Interestingly, opinion polls show that the majority of American respondents to these surveys indicate that they understand that the death penalty does not deter crime,
