and its association may be seen as a luxury good and as such not prone to the same fluctuations as seen with many of the less exclusive goods, but it
is still important. In looking at the logistics and the IT in place we can argue that the company is seeking to manage its internal and downstream supply chain to
add value and ensure customer satisfaction is met in an economical efficient manner. In any business the supply chain is the chain
from the production of the raw material through to the end user, for example for Steinway this is the obtaining of the raw material such as wood and wire though
to the sale to the pianist. Porter described what he saw as a value chain (Porter, 1985). He divided this into five separate sections; inbound logistics, operations, outbound logistics, marketing
and sales, and service (Porter, 1985). Here it is the logistics that are of interest. These different activities are also linked
by the same support activities, there are four of these, but they can be seen to be active throughout the entire value chain, they are firm infrastructure, human resource management,
technological development and procurement (Porter, 1985). At all levels there is the need to maintain quality for Steinway to maintain its high reputation. Logically there are the same pressure
to manage production more efficiently, and to this end there have been the closure of some facilities for additional time, such as the New York facility which will be closing
