in North and Central America. Much of the reason for that resistance is the ubiquity of Carrefour, the "worlds second-largest retailer and the largest in Europe" (Our Stores, n.d.).
When speaking of Wal-Mart, a Carrefour spokesperson quipped that its larger competitor had nothing on Carrefour, because Wal-Mart has far less international experience
than does Carrefour (Prashanth and Gupta, 2004). Though the statement can appear arrogant, it is nonetheless true. The purpose here is to examine and assess Carrefours supply chain
and its approach to operations. The Company Carrefour was founded in France in 1959, and opened its first store in Annecy, Haute-Savoie in
1960 (History, n.d.). The company grew both organically and through acquisition during its first several years and opened its first "hypermarket" in Sainte-Genevi?ve in 1963. This store covered
2,500 square meters and carried a broad range of nonfood items along with Carrefours basic grocery items. Six years later the company opened its first international hypermarket store in
Belgium (History, n.d.). Carrefour went public in 1970. Promod?s created the convenience store format in 1977; the two merged in 1999 to create Europes largest food retailing group,
the same year that Carrefour acquired six grocery chains in Brazil to give it 85 locations in that country (History, n.d.). Current focus
appears to be on Asia. Other than the opening of the 80th Carrefour Hypermarket in Chelm City, Poland, all other new store openings in August 2008 were in Asia.
