Poirier and Bauer (2000) said this: "In simple terms, supply chain refers to those core business processes that create and deliver a product or service, from concept through development and manufacturing or conversion, into a market for consumption" (p, 3). The traditional supply chain involves offices, factories, warehouses that are stacked with completed and semi-completed goods, and a great deal of distribution equipment (Poirier and Bauer, 2000). The traditional physical supply chain brick-and-mortar buildings, sometimes lots of them at many different locations, each with inventories (Poirier and Bauer, 2000). It is extremely capital-intensive (Poirier and Bauer, 2000). The e-supply chain, by contrast, does not require as much capital expenditure, there are far fewer buildings (Poirier and Bauer, 2000). What the e-supply chain has is computers, work stations, and servers, all of which operate with integrated software that was developed collaboratively (Poirier and Bauer, 2000). The global marketplace is one of fierce competition that is being felt by all companies (Industry Canada, 2004). Businesses have been under pressure to reduce their costs, become more collaborative and also to become more proactive (Industry Canada, 2004). To do so, companies and their suppliers are looking towards Web-based supply chain management technology (Industry Canada, 2004). The major key processes in this effort "include Product Description Catalogue, Order Status Information, Inventory Data as well as Demand projections over the Internet" (Industry Canada, 2004).
