ones own words to say how you understand the message (Public Management, 1997). By paraphrasing, i.e. saying what you think the speaker meant, the listener assures he or she understands
what the speaker meant (Drapkin, 2002). Paraphrasing allows the speaker to clear up any misunderstanding (Drapkin, 2002; Public Management, 1997). In that sense, paraphrasing is like an accuracy check (Drapkin,
2002). This becomes even more important when messages are complex and/or when the speaker is really upset about something (Drapkin, 2002). The speaker knows the other person has really listened
to what they were saying so this skill may also have a calming effect. * Empathic Listening. People often confuse empathy and sympathy. These are two very different approaches to
communication. Sympathy is feeling compassion for another person, wishing they were not sad or that they were happier or that some event had not happened to them. Empathy is the
ability to know what another person is feeling, the ability to put oneself in their shoes. Empathic listening helps build trust as well as assuring mutual understanding (Salem, 2003). Empathic
listening is listening and responding to the other persons feelings that are conveyed in the message, most often nonverbally (Fisher, 2005). 2. Effective Orientation and Training Methods Fitzgerald (2004)
