In the medical profession and healthcare industries there are many human elements that need to be considered, not only in the delivery of the service to the patients or clients, but in the way development needs to take place with ongoing changes occurring in as changes to practice, knowledge and legislation take place. In this context supervision may be seen differently than in other types of organization, such as manufacturing. Catherine and David Sawdon1 refer to supervision in this context being a partnership. In order to assess the way it takes place the definition of supervision and way it can take place may be examined to assess the different elements that are present and to consider how it is used, and to what degree this is a partnership and to what degree it is there to ensure compliance.
