These behaviors are taken for granted but they put individuals at serious increased risk for developing melanoma--skin cancer. Studies show that there is a direct link between the number of
times that someone is sunburned in childhood and the risk for developing melanoma and skin cancer in later life. Protecting skin from the sun during childhood and adolescence is tremendously
important as this reduces the risk of skin cancer as a an adult (ACS, 2007). It just makes sense for everyone to guard against skin cancer by using sun protection.
People, in general, do not realize that there is no such thing as a healthy tan. A tan develops because the skin is being damaged. I) Ultraviolet radiation from
the sun is composed of two types of rays, ultraviolet A (UVA) and ultraviolet B (UVB) (Pertler, 2005). A) When ultraviolet radiation reaches the skin it is absorbed
and reacts with "proteins, lipids and cellular DNA" (Pertler, 2005, p. 11). B) This process damages the DNA cells and it is this effect that can lead to skin
cancer in later life. C) Sunscreen works by either absorbing the damaging UV rays or reflecting them away from the body. D) How well a sunscreen works is
quantified according to its "sun protection factor" or SPF. 1 The SPF applies to UVB rays. As yet, there is no FDA approved measure for UVA rays. 2
Therefore, it is best to pick a sunscreen that advertises being "broad spectrum," which means it blocks both UVB and UVA rays (Pertler, 2005). 3 The SPF number offers
consumers a rough estimate of how long the sunscreen can extend safe exposure to the sun. For example, say a fair-skinned child will sunburn in ten minutes if unprotected, an
