the end of Muhammads life (Brown, 2004). On his way back from a farewell pilgrimage, the last one before he died, Muhammad and his followers stopped to rest, and he
asked them whether it wasnt closer to them "than they were to themselves" (Brown, 2004, p. 101). They agreed, and then he "took Ali by the hand, and said He
of whom I am the patron, of him Ali is also the patron" (Brown, 2004, p. 101). Thus, Muhammad designated Ali as his successor, which made perfect sense to his
followers, since Ali was his closest male relative, and also because it was believed that Muhammad had already "seen" Alis succession in a divine revelation (Brown, 2004). Those who
supported Ali became known as the Shiat Ali or Shii; they supported the idea that Ali was Muhammads legitimate successor (Brown, 2004). Thus, Shii political thinking "was ... based on
the conviction that legitimate leadership of the community was reserved for a man who was God-ordained and who possessed extraordinary God-given qualities" (Brown, 2004, p. 101). These qualities were to
be found only in the members of the Prophets family, meaning that the leader would always have to be from that family, and would be appointed by his predecessor (Brown,
2004). The Sunnis, however, do not believe that Muhammad appointed a successor, but died without naming anyone (Shaikh). "The companions of the Prophet later made this appointment in a huge
