the objective of obtaining a lasting interest by a resident entity in one economy in an entity resident in an economy other than that of the investor" (OECD, 1999). The lasting influence implies that it is meant to be a long term, relationship and that the investor will have a degree of influence over the investment (OECD, 1999). A classical definition is given by Graham and Spaulding (2004) who state that FDI is "a company from one country making a physical investment into building a factory in another country" This is amore simplified definition and helps to differentiate between FDI and plan investment, with FDI relating the building of physical resources rather than the creation of portfolio investments (Graham and Spaulding, 2004). For example, the goods may be produced in one area and sold in another (Aizenman and Marion, 2001). Horizontal FDI takes place where there are similar production activities in each country, in SunPower want to set up a factory to produce units in another country and then sell them in that country, this will be horizontal FDI. (Aizenman and Marion, 2001). The expansion into an area such as the UAE, where set up costs may be high may be best undertaken as part of Vertical FDI, whereas in Brazil where there are more changes to be made and setting up is less costly horizontal FDI maybe suitable.
