doing very little correctly in pursuing our course in the Middle East. Discussion According to Sun Tzu, there are five factors that tell him when a country will be successful
in pursuing a military course of action. The five are: "(1) The Moral Law; (2) Heaven; (3) Earth; (4) The Commander; (5) Method and discipline" (Sun Tzu, 2000). The "moral
law causes the people to be in complete accord with their ruler, so that they will follow him regardless of their lives, undismayed by any danger" (Sun Tzu, 2000). "Heaven"
signifies such things as times, seasons, heat, cold, night and day, while "earth" refers to "distances, great and small; danger and security; open ground and narrow passes; the chances of
life and death" (Sun Tzu, 2000). The "Commander" refers not to an actual person but for "the virtues of wisdom, sincerity, benevolence, courage and strictness" (Sun Tzu, 2000). Finally, "method
and discipline" refer to the marshaling and structure of the army "in its proper subdivisions, the graduations of rank among the officers, the maintenance of roads by which supplies may
reach the army, and the control of military expenditure" (Sun Tzu, 2000). Clearly, even on a cursory reading, its apparent that the U.S. in Iraq is not meeting these objectives.
First, a majority of Americans are now solidly against the war, meaning that Bush no longer has the moral law on his side (if he ever did). Certainly there is
no unanimous support for the war among the populace; even those who are strong Bush supporters are questioning the necessity for this intervention. While "heaven" might not obtain in this
case, "earth" certainly does, since the U.S. has to operate in a desert environment which is hard on both personnel and equipment. As for the Commander, once again Americans
