Discussion It proved surprisingly difficult to find journal articles about health care salaries, possibly because hospitals are reluctant to release their pay rates. An informal look at sources on the Internet reveal that there is a widespread belief that nurses salaries are too low and are not expected to increase. Perhaps this perception of low pay is one reason why fewer people are entering the profession. A more formal article appeared in the Journal of Healthcare Management discussing hospital CEO salaries. Authors Newman, Tyler and Dunbar discuss the CEO performance appraisal (PA) and note that the chances of obtaining a "PA of high quality decrease as executive responsibility increases" (Newman, Tyler and Dunbar, 2001, p. 21). They find that the problems with these appraisals are that they are inevitable, political, complex, creative and have a significant impact on both the executive whose performance is being judged and on the institution itself (Newman, Tyler and Dunbar, 2001). They discuss what a successful appraisal is, and suggest ways in which an executive can enhance his chances of receiving high marks. The point of the article that is relevant here is that the authors note that the goal of a CEO performance appraisal should be to link its results to the executives compensation, something that is not currently done. That is, people get paid whether theyre doing a good job or not. They write, "It is strongly recommended that some portion of the CEOs salary directly hinge on his performance in two critical areas: organizational effectiveness and community health status" (Newman, Tyler and Dunbar, 2001, p. 21).
