around through a kingdom with problems. The following paper offers a summary of The Tale of Despereaux. Summary of The Tale of Despereaux Despereauz is a little mouse
that is very different from all the other mice. Mice are supposed to be scared and timid and Despereaux is not timid or frightened. He is eager and curious and
dreams of essentially being a knight. He loves to read and his favorite story is one about a knight and so he essentially believes that the world is as simple,
as pure, and as chivalrous as the story he reads. He is far braver than his size, and far more courageous than any other character in the story. Despereaux
was born into a kingdom that has some problems wherein the sun will not shine and rain will not fall. This is because of something that happened before Despereaux was
born. Apparently a rat, Roscuro, who loved being up above in the light, and not down below in the filth, inadvertently ended up in the queens soup and she passed
out in the soup and died which led to a banishment of all soup. Soup was a major part of the kingdom and as such the sun and rain left
the kingdom. As one critic notes, "there is no sunshine, no joy, no rain, no hope of rejuvenation or future growth. In short, no soup" (Appleby). Roscuro and Despereauz ultimately
meet one another and become friends and the story moves on as they attempt to somehow make things right. Although there are twists and turns it all ends up right
