tale that possesses many of the most well known names in fictional or non-fictional history. They are Helen, Hector, Paris, Agamemnon, and Achilles, although there are hundreds of others within the tale. The following essay presents a summary of the classic tale of ancient times. The Iliad This story deals with the Trojan War after it has been raging for ten years. The war was essentially begun because Paris of Troy stole Helen away from her husband. It is the final year of the war and it begins with Chryses who is a priest of Apollo, asking for his daughter back from Agamemnon who is the commander of the Achaeans. They have taken this woman captive during raids and this woman was actually given to Achilles for his valor and strength in battle. It is in this beginning that we see how Agamemnon and Achilles do not like one another at all, and it is where we see that although Agamemnon does not like Achilles he knows he needs him in his battles. Without Achilles he will not be the city of Troy because so many of the men find strength and determination in the presence of Achilles who appears undefeatable. Achilles who despises Agamemnon, asks his mother, a goddess, to make pleas to Zeus to ensure that Agamemnon will fail in all battles as long as Achilles is not fighting with him. This becomes a powerful reality and the Achaeans seem to be constantly losing every battle as Hector, the leader of the Trojans in war, drives the army back to the beach. Even Agamemnon is discouraged and sends an embassy to beg Achilles to fight once more. Achilles refuses until many more warriors are killed and Achilles faithful friend begs him to come back into ...
