villages and prior to its collapse nearly 3000 years later, the Sumarians were influential to their neighbors in matters of religion, language and other social traits. The history of Sumar is divided into five periods - Uruk, Jemdat Nasr, Early Dynastic, Agade and the Ur III period. Each of the periods was distinctive for the manner in which the various regions within Sumar were ruled and in the religious beliefs of each period. The Sumarians formulated their own language and advanced the concept of the written word. They also established the earliest record known of law codes. Because of their literate status, the Sumarians left many records and papers which chronicle their life and achievements. The Sumarians had a thriving culture and participated in trade through the use of the Euphrates River as a source of transportation. The most profound legacy of the Sumarians is their religion. The Sumarians worshipped four primary deities and several hundreds of others, instead of one God. However, remnants of their religious beliefs are still found in the relationships of the Judea-Christian-Islamic religions of the Middle East. Document 3a As the oldest written story on earth, the tale of Gilgamesh was originally written on twelve clay tablets. The epic tale is of a Babylonian king, two-thirds god and one-third man. Another key character in the story is Enkidu who is half man and half animal. A hunter reports to Gilgamesh that Enkidu has tampered with one of his traps. Following several events which leads to the humanization of Enkidu, the two men meet, fight each other and eventually become friends. Together they fight an evil monster - Humbaba.
