issues through modern articles that touch on recent discoveries and practices. With that in mind the following paper summarizes three different nursing articles and briefly touches on how the information
can be used in clinical practice. Management of Patients with Inflammatory Bowel Disease This article begins with a description of the conditions, the two being examined are Crohns
disease (CD) and ulcerative colitis (UC). Neither of these are curable and they are diseases that occur, and thus can occur, in any age group. The article discusses how the
health issue of UC, in this first part which deals only with UC, is recognized. For example, "UC is a mucosal disease that occurs in the colon. It begins in
the rectal mucosa and extends to a variable proximal level" (Colwell; 2). The article then moves into a discussion of the presentation of the disease and then examines medical treatment
for the disease. "The treatment of UC depends on the mucosal extent and severity of the disease. The mucosal extent is important, because topical rectal therapies can be used
to reach the disease" (Colwell; 2). The author also examines aspects of surgical treatment, indicating that a particular type of surgery, a proctocolectomy, can cure the disease. With this procedure
there is the Heal pouch anal anastomosis which "has become the operation of choice for most patients with UC" (Colwell; 3). Essentially this surgery removes the colon and then the
