has sadly been lost through the passage of time, but what remains on elaborate papyrus manuscripts offer a rare glimpse into the spirituality, government, and trades of the Egyptian people.
Professor Miriam Lichtheim (1914-2004) was a dedicated scholar and lifelong student of Egyptian Literature. She received received her Ph.D. in Egyptology at the University of Chicago and was
affiliated with several prominent U.S. universities before moving to Israel during the 1970s and concluding her academic career at the Hebrew University. Ancient Egyptian Literature, Professor Lichtheims first of
three volumes, was first published in 1973. This 300-page text includes three of the most famous Middle Kingdom texts - "The Dispute Between a Man and His Ba," "The
Eloquent Peasant," and "The Satire of the Trades." "The Dispute Between a Man and His Ba" (Papyrus Berlin 3024) This twelfth-century text is comprised of a single manuscript
(currently contained on 155 vertical columns), of which the first portion is unfortunately missing. Professor Lichtheim found the original manuscript to be extremely cumbersome, requiring several annotations that would
make its reading even more difficult. Therefore, she opted instead to present a broad interpretation of the work, which would focus on its plot. Her translation features a
combination of literary styles that includes lyrical poetry, speeches, and prose, and enables readers to contemplate the dilemma of the protagonist and draw their own conclusions. This Egyptian manuscript,
