production with the exception of the actual filming and editing. This paper summarizes a book chapter that discusses mise-en-scene. Discussion Mise-en-scene is everything in the scene, from the sets to
the costumes to the actors to the props to the lighting to the sound. As noted, it encompasses everything except the actual filming and the editing process that follows. The
chapter first discusses the history of mise-en-scene, and then gives numerous examples of how it has been used in various films. Authors Corrigan and White note that most people are
completely ignorant of the concept of mise-en-scene. They have been taught over years of movie-going to accept what they see on the screen as real, and in fact, the mise-en-scene
of many films is very realistic. That is, the sets are copies of actual buildings or rooms and the directors purpose is to put realistic action on those realistic sets
to foster the illusion that the audiences is watching actual events. When the set is a city street, with ordinary sounds (honking horns, people talking, sirens and so on), with
ordinary lighting and a bustling crowd, most viewers will barely notice it; they will simply accept it as a real street because it is familiar to them from their own
experience of life. If however the audience suddenly finds itself at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, or flying over Pandora, then it becomes immediately and strikingly aware of the
mise-en-scene. They realize that someone has had to create that world; more importantly, they have created a world that makes internal sense. For example, in Lord of the Rings it
