become dangerously lower than it was in the early to middle of the 20th century. The following paper summarizes his interview. Bowling Alone Putnam begins by illustrating that
one of the most powerful realities in America has always been the manner in which the people were involved in the government, the community, and with neighbors. It was once
a nation where all people who could voted, a place where people joined organizations in the nation and in their communities, a nation where people trusted one another and were
involved. Today the situation is very different. Putnam goes through many statistics illustrating how groups such as the PTA, religious churches, organizations like the Boy Scouts, and mens groups such
as the Elks have seen gradual decline in membership over the past few decades. And it is not just one or two percent drops but, in the case of the
Elks, there was a drop of 18 percent since 1979. Putnam is illustrating how the American people are simply not civic minded anymore. They do not attend community meetings, or
group meetings like they used to. He brings in the idea of bowling, as seen in the title, indicating that there has been an increase in the amount of people
who go bowling during a year. But, at the same time there has been a serious decrease in the number of people who belong to leagues and this endangers the
bowling establishment for leagues make up a large part of any revenue pulled in by a bowling alley. This bowling example also serves to illustrate how people are less community
