except as noted above: I. CHAPTER 11: PHYSICAL DEVELOPMENT IN MIDDLE CHILDHOOD A. INTRODUCTION: This section describes the main "characters" we will follow throughout these chapters, 10-year-old Joey and his 8-year-old
sister Lizzie, and their mother Rena. Rena notes that the children are beginning to explore significantly more of the world; in her words, they are "branching out" (Berk, 2008, p.
411). This is characteristic of the years 6-11, which are described as "middle childhood" (Berk, 2008, p. 411). At this time, children throughout the globe are given new responsibilities; in
the West, this generally means they start their formal education while in less-developed countries they may find their classroom is a field or jungle (Berk, 2008). This chapter concentrates
on the physical development of the child through this stage of growth. Berk notes that by this time, the brain has already reached 90% of its adult weight, but the
body continues to develop much more slowly (2008). Physical growth at this point is much less "spectacular" than in earlier years (Berk, 2008, p. 411). The larger brain gives the
