cultures, throughout time, have accepted them as part of life, and a part of life that will ultimately be non-existent upon death. But, there are also differences in how many
cultures accepted the reality of suffering and conflict. The following paper examines how the Aztecs, Mayans, and the culture in the epic Beowulf perceived suffering and conflict. Aztecs
One author illustrates that for the people of the ancient Aztec culture there was not really any sense that death and life were in opposition, or that it was not
absolute (Mu?oz, 1998). In essence, they believed that life and death were not really conflicting with one another. This is why their culture often involved human sacrifice because it could
nourish social life and as such involve itself in some sort of assistance to helping with suffering for some (Mu?oz, 1998). This
author also suggests that the ancient Aztecs believed that life and death complimented one another: "For the Aztecs, death was a compliment to life and intimately associated with life, therefore
not necessarily better than the other. Death was perceived as a place, a further step in life that would offer more security and serenity when contrasted with the suffering and
worries on this plane" (Mu?oz, 1998). In essence, this culture believed that suffering and conflict could be eliminated in death and yet in death there was life as well.
