or illness in the ancient world. Therefore, in ancient Greece and Rome, the practice of euthanasia, that is, intentionally ending a persons life in order to relieve suffering, was a
daily reality (Gupta, Bhatnagar and Mishra, 2006). It was a logical choice to choose death over agonizing suffering during an age when medicine was rudimentary and offered little in the
way of effective analgesics. Nevertheless, the widespread cultural acceptance of euthanasia was challenged by the a minority among physicians who adhered to the Hippocratic School (Gupta, Bhatnagar and Mishra, 2006).
The ascent of Christianity reinforced the stance of physicians belonging to the Hippocratic School and this evolved into physicians offering consistent opposition to euthanasia (Gupta, Bhatnagar and Mishra, 2006).
Prior to Hippocrates (c. 460-377 BCE), there was little in ancient medical practice that the contemporary world would view as scientific. The rituals performed by healers utilized magic, and were
based on the belief that illness and disease were meant as punishments sent by the gods and were believed to be caused by evil spirits (Jankowski, 2010). Hippocrates was
taught by his father, who was also a physician, as well as by others, that the primary means that he could utilize in addressing suffering was to paid his patients
in achieving "physical peace," which could be accomplished by changes in their diet or by urging them to bathe and exercise on a regular basis (Jankowski, 2010, p. 10). In
