In his article "Suffer the restless children: though nearly a million children are regularly given drugs to control hyperactivity, we know little about what the disorder is, or whether it is really a disorder at all" by Alfie Kohn, written in 1989, the author sets out to examine the reality of hyperactivity, showing where some proofs may exist and where there are perhaps far too many vague elements that cannot be proven as it relates to hyperactivity in children. The following paper provides an overview of this article. Suffer the Restless Child by Alfie Kohn As noted, Kohn (1989) illustrates some elements of proof in relationship to some kind of condition, some realities that point to a problem of some sort, but for the most part that proof does not necessarily indicate general hyperactivity. Kohn (1989) indicates that there are many factors that seem to go into the hyperactivity of a child, factors that range from their family lifestyle to how they are diagnosed or seen by instructors. Kohn (1989) also indicates that even professionals seem to change their criteria and understanding of hyperactivity in children every year, all pointing to the fact that it is really not just one condition, and that many factors play a part in how professionals and the public see this "condition" that might not be a "condition" at all.
