biography, which is also a "rather unusual biography at that" (Grant xvii). Grant presents a convincing argument, based on the life and career of Suetonius, that "The Twelve
Caesars is not simply the ancient equivalent of a scandal sheet," as Suetonius was a serious scholar, who had already successfully established his reputation as a scholar with several major
works (Grant xxiv). This was the Suetonius longest work, and it indicates that "extensive and careful research" was involved in its creation (Grant xxiv). For example, Suetonius presents an
argument that, despite the general popular opinion, Augustus perceived Tiberius in a positive light and Suetonius provides extracts from Augustus letters to substantiate this point (Grant xxiv). Additionally, in
his discussion about the circumstances of the birth of Gaius, Suetonius draws on a "letter of Augustus as well as public records to refute the views of two earlier
writers" (Grant xxiv). He refers to his "careful researches" in refuting that Vespasians family was of low origin and he draws on a range of material, "including various documentary sources,"
in presenting the various biographies that make up this text, citing the private documents of the emperors, as well as public sources (Grant xxiv). In regards to Augustus, Suetonius quotes
extensively from the emperors original correspondence, making it clear that he saw the originals, as he "comments on Augustus handwriting and spelling" (Grant xxv). Therefore, it seems reasonable to judge
