poignant story, "Mother," conveys the powerful message that life is tenuous and brief, that the people who we love and who love us can be taken away by death in
seems like an instant. Paley writes, "At the door of the kitchen she said, you never finish your lunch. You run around senselessly. What will become of you? Then she
died" (3). The young narrator obviously resented her mothers intrusions into her life, but then felt a great gaping void when there was no longer anyone to care whether
