measurable physiologic effects of these surgical procedures, such as pulse oximetry) have been observed to be prolonged. Kass and Holman (2001) argue that the sustained effects of this early painful
experience could also be prolonged. Research has definitively shown that administration of sucrose, with or without non-nutritive sucking (i.e., use of a pacifier), to have beneficial effects on pain management
with this patient population (Gatti, 2003). As this is a simple, effective procedure that is easily implemented, Gatti (2003) questions why more
practitioners to do utilize it and posits that it may be due to the persistence of the myth, despite considerable evidence to the contrary, that neonates do not feel pain.
Rather than this myth being true, researchers have noted that neonates, as compared to the adult perception of pain, display hypersensitivity to pain stimuli (Management of procedure-related pain, 2006). The
short-term effects of pain for neonates are indicated by "physiological, endocrine and behavioral responses" (Gray, et al, 2006, p. 10). The long-term effects of painful experiences have been associated
with "altered brain development and later behavior" (Gray, et al, 2006, p. 10). Another reason why the administration of sucrose for pain
management in newborns is under-utilized may be traced to the lack of a formal protocol. In an article published in the Australian Nursing Journal, it was reported that only 15
percent of the neonatal units in Australia had guidelines or policy pertaining to the management of pain in newborns and only 6 percent of hospitals report regular use of pain
