seems that some patients are more willing than others to comply with instructions received from their health care providers. In the cases of one successful experience and one unsuccessful
experience with patient education, it appears that the desire to reassure and not to frighten the patient ultimately can do a disservice. Successful Experience
Mrs. King was a lovely woman, full of life and energy despite a lifetime of health problems. Paralyzed by an accident as a child, she suffered polio while
paralyzed. She recovered far beyond the point that anyone could have expected in the 1940s and lived a rather normal life for many years. As she aged, however,
she developed post-polio syndrome and debilitating osteoporosis. Prior to the onset of these, she had developed and survived breast cancer twice. In
her later years, Mrs. King developed a series of mild yet troublesome conditions. Though her paralysis subsided and she was able to walk after her polio passed, she used
crutches throughout her adult life until she came to need to use a wheelchair and later an electric scooter. She had one urinary tract infection after another; the effects
of her post-polio syndrome left her unable to completely void her urine, which in turn led to the development of further UTIs. Daily self-catheterization became a viable solution.
Nurses showed Mrs. King how to handle the catheter, how to insert it and the steps she needed to take to ensure sanitary conditions.
We demonstrated, and she asked for the opportunity to practice while help was nearby and available. She became quite adept at dealing with the catheter, and it was
