playing field" for a diverse student population and help to achieve these goals (Davila-Medrano, 2003, p. 40). Furthermore, some educators assert that performance-based assessments of programs at the state level
are serving as a "catalyst" that will "raise academic standards for all students" (Parke and Lane, 2008, p. 132). In response to this academic and political environment, numerous strategies
for collaborative curricular development have been proposed in the literature. One of the most successful strategies to facilitate collaboration between teachers while promoting standards-based instruction is curriculum mapping (Koppang, 2004).
Curriculum mapping has been defined as a "process used to gather a database of the operational curriculum of a school" (Koppang, 2004, p. 154). Most school curriculum guides offer
general statement about what students should know, but little in regards to how students should accomplish this learning or what assessment should be used by teachers (Koppang, 2004). The details
given in curriculum maps offer a "clearer picture of what actually occurs in each classroom" (Koppang, 2004, p. 154). Teachers use a "calendar-based system...to map the skills, content and assessment
used in their classrooms" (Koppang, 2004, p. 154). These maps will naturally reflect the differences between individual teachers and their classrooms. These maps can be used for many purposes, which
include: * aligning instruction to the written standards; * developing integrated curriculum units; * providing a baseline for the curriculum review and renewal process;...and *
