As the members of our society grow progressively older a larger and larger percentage of the population becomes categorized as elderly. Winell and Roth (2005), in fact, report
that those sixty-five years of age and up comprise the fastest growing segment of our population. Today, partially as a result of improved heath care practices which result in
longer life, we are faced with many questions regarding what constitutes successful aging. What makes one elderly individual content and happy and the other miserable?
The question of why some people progress so gracefully and happily from one stage of their lives to the next is a question that
psychologists have been considering for decades. There is, of course, no one answer to that question. Basically, however, successful aging requires a certain degree of adaptability. Life,
after all, is full of problems and we must somehow navigate those problems and emerge on the other side relatively unscathed. This is not to say that we will
not suffer and grieve. It only means that we will suffer and grieve when the time is appropriate to do so and then we will get on with our
lives. Numerous theories have been postulated about why some people seem to successfully age and others flounder in unhappiness and
discontentment. Some say that it is a matter social experience and, in particular, a matter of how much we depend on others for our self satisfaction verses how much
