a story that looks at many different characters that are raised in a middle class suburban life and dream of something else. It is a story that presents characters who are lost in a society where they are all but offered everything they could ever want, expect perhaps for substance. The following paper examines the characters within, the society depicted, and analyzes the play in general. Suburbia As one individual critic notes, "The word suburbia conjures up the image of a calm world outside the hustle-bustle of the city, with station wagons, country clubs and happy families" (Koczak). In essence, it is the dream that most of American wants to achieve. "However, the world Bogosian reveals is not a simple and cheerful one. The parking lot of the local 7-11 becomes the stage for the playing out of a completely different set of problems that emerge in Suburbia" (Koczak). The play itself takes place in front of this 7-11 and in the characters we see many different dreams, perspectives, ideals, topics, and personalities illustrated and defined. They discuss such issues as success, friendship, AIDS, racism and all the issues that were and are important for the particular generation. "As a microcosm of the real world, the parking lot becomes a platform for the political discourse and philosophies of Jeff, Tim, Sooze and their friends" (Koczak). Jeff is perhaps the most likeable and most stable and intelligent of the group. He is not as lost, it seems, as his friends and he has some sense of himself and what is important. He is real.
