Easter - properly! Goldberg (2009) describes a case in which substandard care occurred, in which
within the context of a busy dermatological practice. This dermatologist see as many as 100 patients a day and is known as an "expert in the evaluation and treatment of
pigmented lesions" (Goldberg, 2009, p. 8). A 35-year-old woman who has a history of melanoma in her family and a personal history that includes multiple dysplastic nevi comes in for
a yearly office visit and four atypical pigmented lesions are found on her back. They are closely grouped and are all thoroughly documented, photographed and labeled by one of the
nurses on the doctors staff, prior to being biopsied by the dermatologist. One of the biopsies reveals a "superficial invasive melanoma with a Breslow depth of 0.2 mm" (Goldberg,
2009, p. 8). The doctor excises this lesion and tells the patient that her chances of complete recovery are quite good. Within one year, the patient has metastatic melanoma and
she dies with two years. The dermatologist is sued and it is found, within the process of discovery, that the doctor removed the wrong lesion because it had been mislabeled
by his nurse (Goldberg, 2009). Due to the fact that this nurse breached the nursing standard of care, a patient has died. Extent of the problem The Institute of
