they perceived as an increasing substance abuse problem in populations of adults over the age of 50. These researchers linked changes related to aging, including the loss of social
and emotional support and social isolation as factors that can lead to increased drug and alcohol use. The researchers predicted that by 2020, the number of adults over the
age of 50 who need treatment for substance abusing behaviors, including abuse of alcohol, prescription drugs and illicit drugs could top 5 million, creating considerable challenges for clinical mental health
counselors. The researchers began by outlining the problem, relating studies that showed that people experience high levels of disability, family dissolution, isolation and depression as they age.
While many people can adjust to these issues with abusing substances, aging populations who have had problems with substance abuse or dependency earlier in life frequently struggle with this
problem and their need for treatment may be overlooked. As a result, the researchers noted studies in the last decade that show that the number of adults needing treatment
for substance abuse will probably triple by 2020. As a result, the researchers proposed the need for active discourse on the issue, including evaluating prevalence rates, vulnerabilities, age-specific counseling
processes, and appropriate diagnosing, as well as proposing specific interventions that can be used and preventative strategies for older adults. The researchers did an adequate job of breaking down
