also suggests that substance use disorders (SUDs) that frequently result from the use of drugs and alcohol as a coping mechanism for conduct disorders may mask some of the symptoms
of the conduct disorder. Hayman, Mahon & Turner (2002) maintained that there are a variety of relationships between substance use disorders and psychiatric disorders, including conduct disorders that
should be considered when assessing a therapeutic process for adolescents. These researchers maintained that psychopathology of any kind places adolescents at greater risk of developing SUDs, while they also
identified SUDs as a causative or influencing factor in psychiatric disorders, including conduct disorders. Correspondingly, the researchers also believed that psychiatric disorders can also be a causative factor in
the onset of SUDs and relating which came first can be an important step in devising a treatment plan (Hayman, Mahon & Turner, 2002). Substance use disorders (SUDs)
can be defined as "the self-administration of any substance that alters mood, perception or brain function (Brown, Aarons & Abrantes, 2001, as cited by Wolfe, Mash & Wolfe, 2006, p.
226) and occurs in as much as 26 percent of the adolescent population, and include alcohol, tobacco and illegal substance use. Substance use disorders result in problematic functioning, which
