Generally, teenagers and young adults are viewed as susceptible to drug and alcohol abuse, and older individuals are seen as rational, organized, dull, and truthful. Yet, older adults can easily fall prey to substance abuse due to the fact that the society ignores them. Rather than looking for causes for the symptoms of the aged, doctors attribute certain ones to the ordinary course that aging takes. They rarely suspect substance abuse. Yet, there are many older adults who begin abusing substances in old age because they are lonely or depressed, for example. Alcohol is easily accessible for adults in society, and prescription drugs are prescribed in great number to the elderly. Doctors often hand out prescriptions like candy to the elderly population. While controlled substances are a different matter, it seems as if doctors think nothing of prescribing a mild sedative to an older person on occasion. There is certainly reason for concern when an older person drinks too much, or takes too many pills, because their bodies are not as healthy as those of younger adults. Metabolism changes and older individuals cannot handle alcohol in he same way as their younger friends or relatives. Substance abuse in the elderly population not only hinders physical health, it deprives older individuals of an excellent quality of life that is achievable with some assistance.
