those arenas is the nursing profession. Long hours, stress, and a multitude of other problems have the potential to combine with the fact that nurses often have easy access
to drugs to produce substance abuse. In reality many of these same factors enter into the equation of substance abuse among other segments of the population as well.
Indeed, an estimated thirteen percent of the employed component of the U.S. general population abuses drugs (Dunn 572). Nurses do not have a magic charm against such abuse.
An estimated ten percent of nurses abuse drugs (Dunn 572). In nursing, however, the overall impact of the abuse is potentially much greater. Nurses occupy a sensitive and
tremendously important position in health care. They are, in fact, on the front lines in terms of their responsibility to attending to our nations health care needs. Clark
and Farnsworth (223) reports an estimated: "6%-8% of nurses are affected currently by a drug
or alcohol-related problem to the extent that job performance is impaired" Not only are the
direct health impacts to the nurse deleterious, impaired nurses cannot meet their responsibility to provide top quality health care. Patient health is potentially compromised and organizational efficiency threatened.
Detecting and dealing with substance abuse among nurses is thus a primary concern from more than one societal perspective. Medical professionals who self-treat
