war on drugs. And while society shuns drug use, critics say that television shows glorify drug use and actually encourage youths to enter the drug trade. To some extent, the
charge that television encourages drug use is true. Although many police dramas really do not do this, there are many music channels and as well as television shows that foster
a sense that drug use can be fun and engaged in casually. Although illegal, many programs include discussions on marijuana and other drugs. With more and more reality based television,
there is a sense that it is cool to use illegal drugs. On the show The Real World, a reality television show popular with teens, Julie let it slip that
Danny is a pot head off screen ("Drug," 2002). It was supposed to have been kept secret (2002). Such messages do perhaps influence kids who look to older teens and
young adults as role models. At the same time, there are also many messages on television that go against drugs. Not too long ago Dr. Phil railed against a teenager
for smoking pot every day. There are mixed messages on television about drugs. While the days where drug dealers are glorified seem to be gone, some positive drug messages do
come through in rap and rock music, much of which is aired on MTV. Also, coverage of the stars usually include stories of drug usage. These are the things that
perhaps do influence young people and prompt them to buy illegal drugs. While peers are likely more influential, the messages to come from television are not always helpful. Another thing
