can be an important part of successful treatment. The "Lopez" family sought support because of Mr. Lopez active substance abuse, but family interviews and work with the family revealed
a number of underlying family problems that may have exacerbated his chemical dependency. Client System The Lopez family is a large, Latino family with extended family members who
are active participants in their lives. This family sought initial support for Mr. Lopezs substance abuse and goals progressed through the identification of a number of other family problems.
The following is an overview of the Lopez family: Family Composition: Male/female parental dyad with four school-aged children living at home. Gender and Rank Order:
Father, "Juan," 38; mother, "Maria," 36; child, "Angie," 11; child, "Remy," 9; child "Paula," 7; child Pablo, 5. Subsystem: Mother and father are in a monogamous relationship but
are both admitted homosexuals. This marital dyad, then, is complicated. The family is influenced both by their extended family and by their participation in
the Catholic Church and in work communities. Juans mother, Marianna, lives a block away and spends time with the children after school. Juans father, Eduardo, is deceased.
Marias mother, Rachelle, lives in the next town. Marias father, Jorge and stepmother, Louisa, live 30 miles away, but rarely see the family. Both Juan and Maria
