Abstract Substance abuse among the elderly is growing problem. Substance abuse among
the elderly is more difficult to detect and treat, however, than it is among the younger generations. A rowing world population combines with people living longer thanks to improvements
in medicine to result in a population with more elderly than we have had in the past. Substance abuse can be continuous, starting at an early age and lasting
into old age or it can be late onset. The legality of alcohol is a definite issue in making it a drug of choice for the elderly. Substance
abuse among the elderly must be addressed more effectively. Medical professionals need to be aware of the issue and particularly sensitive to the possibility of alcohol use in their
patients. Introduction Substance abuse is typically thought of
as being concentrated among the younger generation. In reality, the number of elderly individuals that misuse alcohol or other drugs is growing! This misuse often extends not just
