A 9 page discussion of substance abuse in one of the more surprising segments of our society,
that segment comprised by our medical professionals. The author contends that the same factors enter into determining this abuse as do with street users. In some estimations, however, the problem is much easier to address. Not only can factors such as more stringent inventory control, and leadership and accountability within an organization favorably influence substance abuse, so can the expertise of the organization be turned toward treating the root cause of the problem. Substance abuse unfortunately permeates all sectors of our society. Far from being limited to use among societys less desirable, substance abuse occurs among all races
and all socioeconomic classes (Irwin). One of the most disturbing aspects of substance abuse, in fact, is when it occurs among professionals that are in one way or another
responsible for the well being of others. No better example is available than substance abuse as it occurs among the most elite segment of our population. That segment
is comprised by the medical professionals that attend to the nations health care needs! A quick review of the literature, in fact, reviews that anesthesiologists and Certified Registered Nurse
Anesthetists are among the more common substance abusers! Just as interesting is the fact that the drugs these individuals most often abuse are not typically manufactured in the illicit
meth lab setting but rather by the major drug manufacturers that provide for the needs of these professionals patients. Substance abuse among medical professionals it seems occurs in direct
relation to the ease with which drugs can be accessed. Unfortunately, in too many medical settings relatively unrestricted access to drugs facilitates substance abuse among medical professionals.
Discussion Hines defines drug abuse as "the continued use of a
drug despite negative consequences". Physicians in this field and certified registered nurse anesthetists (CRNA) alike have a higher than average likelihood of succumbing to substance abuse. The Texas
