The therapists behavior during motivational interviewing begins with a genuine attempt to understand what the clients frame of reference is. How does he view the world? What is his frame
of reference for understanding their world. The next step is to accept that worldview and offer acceptance and affirmation while eliciting and reinforcing any motivation-oriented statement the client may say
(Mid-Atlantic Addiction Technology Transfer Center, 2012). These would be statements that suggest the client knows he has a problem and that he needs to change or that he has the
ability to change. Therapists must be able to recognize when the client is suggesting that he can change. This goes along with reinforcing the clients autonomy and freedom of choice
(Mid-Atlantic Addiction Technology Transfer Center, 2012). A meta-analysis of empirical studies that focused on motivational interviewing was conducted using a sample of people who had problems with drugs, alcohol,
eating, and exercise (Burke, Arkowitz & Menchola, 2003). There was an overall average of a 56 percent reduction in drug and alcohol use. This would suggest that motivational interviewing may
be an effective model with substance abuse. 2. Controversy using medication in recovery treatment Until the relatively recent past, detoxification was considered to be the first step in becoming
substance free. These painful withdrawals were thought to be punishment for moral failings. Scientific research has shown that detoxification is indeed the first step but it does not have to
