culture, or the common values collectively shared by members of a particular society (Schaefer and Lamm, 1995). However, within any culture, there invariably emerges what sociologists describe as a
subculture, which defines its own unique ethical standards and modes of acceptable behavior (Schaefer and Lamm, 1995). Subcultures have historically been prevalent in the United States, as the melting
pot philosophy that all separate ethnic cultures blend together as one has never proven to be successful. There have always been neighborhoods that subscribe to their own unique ethnic
subculture, whether it is Harlem, Chinatown, or Little Italy. America takes the subculture concept even further with the emergence of groups that may link minorities of different ethnic groups that
share some kind of common link - such as religion or socioeconomic status - that bonds them together. Author and journalist Hampton Sides has long been fascinated by the
characteristics and conditions that distinguish American culture. In his fascinating slice of Americana, Sides (1989) considers the many tribes that supplement the nuclear family. The travelogue is admittedly
shaped by a Memphis environment that allowed black and white to peacefully meld together, which eventually overdosed on the subculture of excessive Elvis pop culture worship. Americana reveal American
subcultures as an important type of communication, with little groups combining to form large voices that deserved to be heard. The subcultures of America illustrate how individual worlds can
