space, and other life forms. Discussion Sub-Saharan Africa is the site of a severe health crisis: it has 10% of the worlds population but nearly two-thirds of
all cases of HIV/AIDS. The impact is staggering, both on population growth and on the economic status of the nations most affected: "In high-prevalence countries in sub-Saharan Africa,
the epidemic has a serious impact on households and communities. Studies show these countries losing on average between 1% and 2% of their annual economic growth. AIDS-affected households appear more
likely to suffer severe poverty than non-affected households, and older parents who lose adult children to AIDS are exceptionally prone to destitution" (Regional overview, 2004). One or two percent
of annual economic growth is a tremendous amount of money. It is also being urbanized at a fantastic rate, with predictions indicating that by 2030, over half of all Africans
will live in cities (African ministerial conference, 2005). Unfortunately, this huge increase in urban dwelling has also exacerbated the problem of slums; in 2001, "approximately 61% of all African
urban residents lived in slums" (African ministerial conference, 2005). This means that almost two-thirds of the African urban population lives in substandard conditions; a situation that could well lead
to significant social problems, unrest and violence. The climate of sub-Saharan Africa is tropical, "except for the high inland plateaus and the southern part of South Africa. Within
10 degrees of the Equator, the climate seldom varies and is generally hot and rainy" (Tips for travelers, 2001). The heat means that water is a vital resource; however,
