to Nat Turner as a young boy and as he was growing up. Somewhat surreal, there is a sense that Turner has used his psychic abilities to project a vision
of his future. In fact, Turners visions are well known historically and are thought to be somewhat tied to his religious beliefs. In the second part of the work, there
is also reference to his childhood and adolescence. As Turner grows up, his intelligence is clearly noticed. Nat, a slave in his own right, seems to be a bit smarter
than most would think slaves should be. The whole idea of enslaving people is abhorrent, but many rationalized that the slaves were inferior. The author demonstrates that this is not
true at all. In the context of this work, Styron (1967) provides a fleshed out character that is based on the real life slave Nat Turner. The third part of
this work sees a very angry character. Prior to the welling up of this anger, Turner realizes his strengths, but here, he begins to believe that the situation they are
all in is unacceptable. All too often people do succumb to their captors and even accept their fate. Nat Turner, throughout the work, questions the institution of slavery but it
is not until this turning point that Nat truly decides to rebel. In the fourth chapter, the book is taken full circle as the protagonist once again recalls his vision
of a boat that he had during childhood. By this time, he had been arrested after leading the infamous rebellion and is waiting to be executed. The book does
delve into the slave rebellion, something that Turner is most well known for. It is important to note that The Confessions of Nat Turner is a work of historic fiction.
