it relates to the dramatic and tragic tale that is typical of Shakespeare. In the following paper we present an examination of the use of style, tone, and irony in
Shakespeares "Othello." Style In order to better understand the style of Shakespeares play it is helpful to note that, "Complex thought comes out of complex thinking, not out of
complex style. Look closely at the sentences of most distinguished writers and you will invariably find that the words chosen and the syntax used are fundamentally simple" (Clark TheEnglishStyleBook.htm). What
makes the style intricate and complex is the themes and the thinking which goes along with complex themes. Anyone familiar with Shakespeares style knows that this is incredibly and powerfully
true. In better examining this we turn to the style that relates to the person of Iago as he tries to shift perspectives and beliefs to his own advantage.
Iago entreats Othello in illustrating how Desdemona is property, stating, "Poor and content is rich, and rich enough; But riches finales is as poor as winter, To him that ever
fears he shall be poor" (Shakespeare III iii). In this we can see that "The word content is used to represent Othello s current situation, where he is content and
therefore rich. However, Iago emphasizes that although Othello has Desdemona, he is still as poor as winter, because she belongs to someone else" (Anonymous Othello othello.htm). In addition we note
that "The word fear is used to make Othello feel more aware of Desdemona s adultery. The style of his speech is poetic, and this is unusual, since his language
